McFall, a member of the 5th Minnesota Infantry, Company C, describes the company's movements during the Dakota Conflict, including guarding the Yellow Medicine Agency warehouse when annuity payments were late, the eventual dispensing of its contents to the Dakota, and the company's participation in the protection of Fort Ridgely during the siege. He frequently mentions Lieutenant Timothy J. Sheehan and Sergeant John Jones.
